Stock physically in Amazon's warehouse with no active listing attached, so it cannot be sold.
Why it matters
Stranded inventory is pure dead weight: you are paying storage on units that cannot generate a sale, and it drags your IPI down at the same time. It is also one of the most common and most overlooked problems in a large catalog.
In practice
Causes are usually mundane, a suppressed listing, a pricing error rule, a category restriction, a deleted SKU. The Fix Stranded Inventory page in Seller Central lists them all, and most resolve in minutes. Checking it on a fixed weekly cadence is one of the highest-value routine tasks in an Amazon operation.
